Last night, as I was laughing through another season of American Idol auditions, I began to think about the idea of dreams. We all have dreams or aspirations that we hold near and dear to our heart, but are our dreams something that we should turn into tangible goals that we accomplish or should they merely remain a figment of our imagination? I think that some dreams are meant to be just that, an imagination. You know, some thing or some place that we can drift off to during the mundane parts of life. The idea of imagining, in itself, can work to help us in more ways than one. Imagining can release endorphins (neurotransmitters produced in the brain that reduce pain) to help change moods and give that feel good feeling. So, when you are sitting through another status meeting or irrelevant conversation, take a quick imaginary trip to Maui with the person you would love to be with and see how your mood changes. This could spawn the side affect of making you loath your present situation, HOWEVER, it will create an effect in you and that's what we all need to get us to that next level, right? (note my correct usage of the words affect and effect)

Many of the contestants on Idol had their dreams crushed...this one stood out to me last night:

Immediately after Idol, the news came on detailing the horrific state of Haiti after the 7.0 quake hit the region. I went from watching Idol judges shatter the dreams of amateur singers to nature shattering the dreams and lives of a nation.

Friends, dreams can be shattered in an instant by circumstances that are beyond our control. This is why it is vital to make every moment count and cause a positive affect on your environment and those around you.  Will all of us get to fly to the moon, make millions of dollars, or retain celebrity status? Maybe not. But can all of us do something in this very moment to make some one else smile or make ourselves smile? Yes!

Prayers to Haiti.

Why not today?
